Celebrating Juneteenth with Craft Beer and Community

On this Juneteenth, the Alternative Blacks Podcast raises a toast to freedom, diversity, and inclusivity in the craft beer community. As we commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, we reflect on the importance of creating spaces that welcome everyone, including the vibrant world of craft beer.

A Brief History of Juneteenth: Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, marks the day—June 19, 1865—when enslaved African Americans in Texas finally learned of their freedom, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. This momentous occasion not only symbolizes the end of slavery in the United States but also celebrates the resilience, strength, and cultural contributions of African Americans throughout history.

Celebrating Juneteenth: Juneteenth celebrations have evolved into joyous occasions that embrace African American culture and heritage. Traditionally, festivities include parades, picnics, music, and readings of the Emancipation Proclamation. It's a time for community gatherings, sharing stories, and honoring ancestors who fought for freedom.

Craft Beer: A Tapestry of Flavors and Stories: Craft beer isn't just about what's in the glass—it's a celebration of culture, tradition, and innovation. From the rich history of brewing techniques to the modern flavors that reflect our diverse palates, craft beer embodies the spirit of exploration and creativity.

What We're Drinking to Celebrate:

Chris: To celebrate Juneteenth, I'm raising a glass of Lofa Lager by Two Locals. This beer represents the journey and dedication of Philadelphia's first Black-owned brewery. Founded by Richard and Mengistu, Two Locals is about more than brewing great beer—it's about creating a path for diversity in the brewing industry. Their mission to establish the first Black-owned brewery in Philadelphia aligns perfectly with the values of Juneteenth: freedom, opportunity, and community empowerment.

Tyler: I'm grabbing Brooklyn Lager by Brooklyn Brewery. Brooklyn Brewery, under the guidance of Garret Oliver, is a pioneer in the craft brewing industry, championing diversity and excellence. The Michael Jackson Foundation for Brewing & Distilling (MJF Scholarship) is a testament to Garret's commitment to supporting underrepresented individuals in brewing and distilling. Learn more here.

Honorable Mention: We can't talk about craft beer and diversity without mentioning the "Black is Beautiful" beer by Weathered Souls Brewing Co. This initiative created a whole community movement, encouraging breweries worldwide to brew their own versions of the stout and donate proceeds to local organizations that support equality and inclusion. It's a powerful reminder of the positive impact the craft beer community can have when it comes together for a common cause.

Join Us: We invite you to join us in celebrating Juneteenth with a craft beer that honors diversity, community, and progress. Let's raise awareness, support diversity in craft beer, and celebrate the joy of sharing a good brew with friends, old and new.
